6th Grade Portfolio Presentations
Dear Fellow Moose,
I did a double take as I was examining the calendar and realized that half of the week next week is in JUNE. These last few months have been abuzz with activity, special presentations and learning.
Today we were delighted by Mr. Bender and the SES bands playing toe-tapping numbers. They will perform tonight at 5:30 as well. Bravo musicians! We were also transported into the past today, as 6th graders presented their hero research in their Living History Museum. Heroes came alive in our gym ( in full costume) and told us about their amazing lives. The sixth graders did a wonderful job researching and writing about what it means to be a hero as well as identifying and studying a particular hero to them.
Next week the PTO is presenting "Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader" on May 30th at 6:30pm. We have many special guests from town as well as teachers participating in this 5th grade level trivia game! It should be quite entertaining! Please consider coming to this fun event.
Tony Vacca, a renowned world rhythms percussionist will perform for our whole school on Thursday, June 1st at 2:00 pm! He will also lead a workshop for 5th and 6th graders at 1:00. We are thrilled to have this talented artist visit and perform at our school!
On Friday, June 2nd our student led drama club will perform their 3rd annual masterpiece musical at 2:00 and 6:30. Students in grades 2-5 are participating in this production. Special thanks to fifth graders Forrest Carvalho and Arin Andrews for leading and directing this adventure and to Becca Flinker for facilitating and supporting it. Events like this are what makes our small school so special. Thanks to the families, staff and students who encouraged this opportunity.

It is 6th grade portfolio season. We are looking for volunteer coaches to help our 6th graders prepare for their portfolio presentations. This is a unique opportunity to learn about the 6th graders and their learning journeys while at Shutesbury Elementary School. The coaching schedule is :

Shutesbury Elementary School PTO Presents “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?”
This game show, trivia fundraiser will be held on Tuesday, May 30 at 6:30pm at the school and we invite townsfolk to participate or just come to watch! All participants will pair up with an intelligent, enthusiastic fifth grader to answer 5th grade level trivia questions. Entry fee for participants will be $10/person (may be sponsored by your Board, Committee, or place of business). There will be a suggested donation at the door for our audience as well as a bake sale and SES Moose Shirts for sale! If you would like to be a participant, orbake or help at the event, please contact Jessica Carlson-Belanger at [email protected].
Staff Appreciation Lunch: This year's lunch will be on Tuesday, June 6th. It is a great way for parents to thank the teachers and staff of Shutesbury Elementary School for all they do for our children.
The PTO needs volunteers to contribute food and drinks and to set up (9-11:30am) and clean up (1:15-2:45) the lunch. If you can help in any way, please contact Jaime Donta ([email protected]).
***COMMUNITY NEWS***
On June 18th Clif and Arleen Read will dip the rear wheels of our bicycles into the waters of the Pacific Ocean in Anacortes WA, and begin our 9 week, 3,712 mile ride east to Boston where we will dip our front wheels into the Atlantic (hopefully) on August 12th. We will be making this amazing journey with an incredible group of 6 core riders and a larger group of friends and family who will join us for different segments of the trip.
Many of you know that we lost our dear son Charlie last August 15th at age 16 to Sudden Unexpected Death from Epilepsy (SUDEP). Our C2C4Charlie ride this summer will be held in Charlie’s memory, and as a fundraising event to support the work of the SUDEP Institute of the Epilepsy Foundation. The institute funds research into SUDEP causes and prevention, educates families and health care providers about its risks, and supports the many devastated families of SUDEP victims. Each year we lose 3,000 people to SUDEP, primarily teens and young adults, without any clear understanding of its cause.
While our riding group will be small, we are hoping our broader community will help support us through the summer by following our blog and Facebook posts, and for those interested, by contributing to our fundraising effort for the SUDEP Institute.

The 37th annual Lake Wyola Road Race and Walk will be held on Sunday, June 11,2017. Walkers start at 10 and runners at 10:30. As usual, there will be t-shirts for all pre registrants, refreshments, awards and a raffle. It is again part of the SMAC race series.
We offer a $10 fee for participants 12 and under (no t-shirt) and team scoring and prizes.
