Hello Fellow Moose,

From very warm days to very rainy days, this short week was filled with New England weather. It has been such a joy to watch the students exploring the woods, building forts and fairy houses and using their imaginations at recess. The true fall weather and temperatures are forecasted for next week. As a reminder, when students are playing outside, closed-toed shoes and shoes secured to children's feet are the safest options! 

This week included some fun events. The PTO hosted a morning meet and greet this week! Thank you to those who organized and attended. There were also lots of beautiful smiles this morning for school picture day! 

Next week is another 4-day week for students. Friday the 19th is a Teacher Professional Development Day. Students do not come to school on Friday October 19th. Next week is also our Autumn Book Fair! Ms. L has organized the Book Fair to take place from October 15th-18th. The family Book Fair evening will take place on Wednesday, October 17th from 5:30-7:30 pm! 

We will be holding our 5^th annual Vocabulary Costume Day on Wednesday, October 31^st.  We will distribute a letter later in the month that details this event.  All students will identify a vibrant and unique vocabulary word that they will dress up as. Students will need to have the word written and attached to their costume. Many students create these word cards in class. The point of this day is to teach others the meaning of your vocabulary word through costume. Costumes can be as elaborate or as simple as the student wants. For example, the student's word could be "vibrant" and they could wear bright, bold colors.

***MOOSE INTERVIEW OF THE WEEK***

SAM FROM 6^th GRADE!

JCB:  What are you enjoying about 6^th grade?
SW:  Recess.  Usually I play football.  And reading.

JCB:  What are you reading right now?
SW:  I’m reading Cleopatra, the Third Book.  It’s about an ancient Egypt princess who goes in time and she was good with a slingshot so now she’s good with a ray gun.

JCB:  What is your favorite food to eat?
SW:  Ice cream.  Chocolate ice cream.

JCB:  What is your favorite thing to do at home?
SW:  My favorite thing to do at home is actually reading.  I like to occasionally play with my sister outside. 

JCB:  What do you like to do outside?

SW:  Mostly, I like to play football with her and she likes to build forts.

JCB:  Are you looking forward to middle school?
SW:  Yes, I’m looking forward to it because we’ll have new teachers and I’m hoping for less homework.

JCB:  What are you looking forward to in 6^th grade this year?
SW:  I’m looking forward to Halloween when we go into our costumes and we have the words on us.  I think I’m going to be a werewolf.

The Book Fair is Coming!

The Scholastic Book Fair brings to school a selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books. Giving kids the opportunity to choose their own books motivates them to read more. The book fair provides funds for our library and leadership opportunities for our 5th and 6th graders too! In the spring, we will once again run a fair in conjunction with World Eye Books of Greenfield.

Book Fair Dates:         Monday, October 15th to Thursday, October 18^th  

Shopping Hours:         School hours each day, plus Wednesday evening

Family Event:             Wednesday, October 17^th from 5:30-7:30

FAMILY PLAYTIME: Cancellation: NO Family Playtime this Sunday (Oct. 14th). My apologies. The next Family Playtime will be November 4th from 10:00-11:30 at Erving Elementary School.

FAMILY YOGA: This Monday, October 15th begins a 5 part-series from 9:30-10:15 at the Wendell Library. FREE! 

The program is ideal for kids age 2-5, however we are flexible. Baby siblings always welcome. In this class we use engaging music to take kids through movements and postures, we sing familiar songs as we add yoga poses, we take trips around the room to find different animals and do their poses, we develop fun obstacle courses and more! **Not too late to register or show up!

CREATE ART with TODDLERS: Begins Saturday, November 3rd, for 3 sessions from 9:30-10:30

Process-based Art Projects for Toddlers 

Ages 2-5 and their care givers

Non-toxic, nature-based materials inspired by books. Healthy snack time too! 

Come play and create with your child. No fee, but registration required.

Thursday, October 25th, 6:30-7:30, Here They Come! David Hyde Costello, Author/Illustrator, visits at the Leverett Library to read his Halloween themed children's book. Free books, snack. You are welcome to wear a costume or pj's!

SAVE THE DATE: 

November 9th, Shutesbury Athletic Club Community Dinner 6:00-7:30 to benefit the Community Network for Children Program. Tacos and other yummy options will be served! This was a VERY popular event this past spring. Adults $10, Kids/Seniors $5

***MOOSE ON THE MOVE NEWS***

There have been a lot of turkeys out on our track!  No, not the students and staff….actual TURKEYS!  Check out the track in the upper field next time you’re at school and see if you can catch the turkeys putting in their laps!

We regularly post the kids’ personal milestones in the front hallway (next to the stage door), in the Roadtown News, and they will be recognized at assembly.  These children will be recognized at the next assembly for hitting personal milestones:
