NO SCHOOL.  Winter Break!

Hello Moose Families!

The groundhog has spoken and hopefully his prediction of an early spring will be true!  The temps are warming up making our grounds very slippery and wet.  Snow clothes are still needed for recess play so that your children don't come home soaking wet.  Thanks for supporting our outdoor play!

The PTO hosted a fundraiser at Quarters last night and they have many other events on the upcoming agenda.  If you are interested, pop in to the next PTO meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 13 from 8:45-9:45am in the library.  Lots of fun stuff coming up!

We have just hit our 100th day of school!!  That means we are just over our half way mark for this school year.  Time is flying by!  Speaking of which, the 6th graders were visited by the Amherst Regional Middle School staff this week for their first introduction to their big transition "down the hill."  This visit really puts things in perspective for our oldest students and we are very excited for them to take this next step. A reminder to grade 6 parents and guardians to keep the evening of February 27th open for an informational evening at ARMS to learn about the logistics of 7th grade.

Have a fun and safe weekend!

Jackie

Capping Children’s Daily Screen Time at 2 Hours Linked With Better Cognition

Limiting children’s recreational screen time to two hours per day, and coupling this with a good night’s sleep and sufficient physical activity, may mean better cognitive function.

In a study in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, researchers from Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute examined data from a longitudinal, observational study of 4,500 U.S. children. The researchers looked at the self-reported data on sleeping habits, physical activity and daily screen time. They used the NIH Toolbox to measure six cognitive domains: language abilities, episodic memory, executive function, attention, working memory and processing speed.

The researchers then measured the results against the Canadian 24-hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth, which offer three recommendations for cognitive development: 9–11 hours of sleep a night, less than two hours of recreational screen time and at least an hour of daily physical activity. The results showed that the child participants spent an average of 3.6 hours a day engaged in recreational screen time.

The study also showed that 29 percent met none of the recommended guidelines, 41 percent met only one criterion, 25 percent met two, and 5 percent met all three. Further, the more recommendations a child met, the better the child’s cognition scores.

The results showed that the child participants spent an average of 3.6 hours a day engaged in recreational screen time.

And, compared with meeting none of the recommendations, participants who met all three recommendations, the screen time recommendation only, and both the screen time and sleep recommendations had better global cognition.

“Based on our findings, pediatricians, parents, educators, and policymakers should promote limiting recreational screen time and prioritizing healthy sleep routines throughout childhood and adolescence,” says study author Jeremy Walsh of Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute.

***MOOSE ON THE MOVE NEWS***

Thanks to Matt Foster for keeping our track clear of snow!!  He has been keeping up with it after each snowfall and it’s much appreciated.  And thanks to all the motivated Moose for joining us during this very cold and slippery session of Moose on the Move!

We (students/staff) ran and walked 203 miles in January!!  Way to go, Moose!  We have gone 1,360 miles total this school year!!  That is like traveling by foot from Shutesbury to Kansas City, Missouri.  Whoa!

We’d also like to recognize some staff members who have been putting in a lot of miles outside of school time!  Mr. Peelle has racked up 161 miles this school year and Laura, 5th grade teacher, has racked up 93 miles!!  Staff who complete miles during the school day will be recognized with awards at assembly.  Thanks for your support!

The following students have hit personal milestones this past month and will be recognized at the next assembly:

***MOOSE INTERVIEW OF THE WEEK***

GIANLUCA FROM 5th GRADE!
GM

JCB:  What is your favorite thing about school?
GM:  That would be probably math.  We’re working on multiplication and division and soon we’ll be working on multiplication and division with decimals.

JCB:  What do you like to do outside?
GM:  I like to either play basketball or I like to, like, skate on my frog pond.

JCB:  What would you like to be when you grow up?
GM:  I’d either like to be a professional basketball player or a professional baseball player.

JCB:  Who is your favorite basketball player?
GM:  Stephen Curry.  He plays for the Golden State Warriors.  He actually is the best shooter in NBA history.

JCB:  I thought that was Larry Bird?
GM:  No, he’s 2nd now.

JCB:  What is your favorite food?
GM:  It’s my dad’s chakri.  It’s yogurt, pineapples and a few other things.  There’s a little bit of brown sugar in it.

JCB:  What is your favorite thing to do at home?
GM:  Play video games.  Easy.  My favorite game is Dungeons and Dragons or NBA 2K18.

JCB:  If you could be any animal, what animal would you be and why?
GM:  That would be honestly it’s hard to choose between a shark or cheetah or a peregrine falcon.      The peregrine falcon because it can fly at speeds  up to 45-55mph.  The cheetah can run up to 75 mph and to be honest I just love fast animals.

JCB:  What is the biggest word you know?
GM:  Supercalifragilisticexpialadocious!
