Principal’s Message:

Dear SES Community,

Welcome back! We have been enjoying a fabulous start to the 2014-2015 school year! The hallways and classrooms are filled with the exciting and motivating learning “buzz”. Our kick-off opening assembly was energizing and filled with music and laughter. I want to extend a special “thank you” to Jim Henry and his daughter Ruby who attended and delighted us with some beautiful music. Also, we are grateful to the families that provided a special welcome breakfast to our Kindergarten families and prepared the traditional Kindergarten notebook gifting.

There are some fabulous new staff members at SES this year. Warm welcomes go out to Christine Sirard (music), Jasmine Sicotte (school psychologist), Parmatma Khalsa (para-educator 5/6), and Valerie Wisniewski (para-educator pre-K). We are thrilled to have these educators on board.

SES is in the process of creating a new school web page (Thanks Debbie Lee)! It is our hope that this page will be a tool that will answer frequently asked questions regarding lunch, dates, meetings and times. It will also be a window into your child’s classroom, as you will be able to access classroom webpages! The school committee and PTO will also have information on this site. If you haven’t yet, check out the new site at www.shutesburyschool.org

I can’t emphasize my joy enough for the opportunity to be the principal of this special school.  I have spent some time in classrooms, on the playground, riding buses, in the cafeteria and meeting the incredible children that comprise this place. It is truly a building that radiates a love of learning and of each other. I can’t wait for this year’s journey.

Please save the date of the evening of September 17th for Open House. There will be more information to follow on this. The first school committee meeting will take place on September 18th. At that time, the committee will review and approve the school handbook. In the meantime, if you have handbook-like questions, please refer to last year’s handbook. Of course, you may always contact the school for any and all questions. You can reach me at 259-1212 X 111, or by email at [email protected].

Happy September and a warm welcome back to you all,
Jackie Mendonsa, Principal

***SCHOOL NEWS***

*IMPORTANT SCHOOL REMINDERS:

~Please send in a yellow note if your child will be doing something different at the end of the day than they usually do.  This includes attending afterschool, going home on a different bus, or being picked up at any point throughout the day.

~School breakfast begins on Tuesday, September 2.  Breakfast will now be served from 8:20-8:45.  See attached flyer for details!

~PTO Meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 3 from 7-8pm at the Shutesbury Athletic Club.  We are looking for new executive members this year as well as help with organization, fundraisers, and communication with the school and community.  Please stop by!

~Pick ups at the end of the school day will happen in the Conference Room.  Adults and students should enter the conference room and make sure the staff member in charge (usually Ms. Larson) knows that you are leaving.

*BOXTOPS! BOXTOPS! BOXTOPS!  Have you seen those boxtops for education symbols on your Nature Valley granola bars and Cheerios? Cut them out and send them to the school with your child! Every boxtop collected earns us a dime for our school.  It doesn't seem like much but they really do add up. You can send in boxtops any time of the year. There is a jar in the front office. However, we will be submitting our first wave of boxtops at the end of October.

Some products that contain boxtops are: Ziploc bags, Pillsbury baking mixes, Scott paper towels, Betty Crocker, Cheerios, Cascadian Farms, Juicy Juice and Green Giant Vegetables.

Keep your eyes peeled and clip your boxes before recycling.

Thanks, Amber O'Brien (SES boxtop coordinator)

*SUZUKI PIANO LESSONS:  Are you interested in introducing your child to the piano? I am a local, Shutesbury music teacher with over 15 years of experience teaching beginner to intermediate students of all ages. The Suzuki method teaches learning through demonstration and ear training. Reading music is introduced gradually so even young children can learn to master and play songs with musicality. I believe learning music should bring your child both joy, discipline and a sense of accomplishment. I have a couple of spots open this Fall. Give me a call or e-mail if you have further questions. Thanks, Amber O'Brien
