Principal’s Message:

10/17/14

Dear SES Community,

What a warm, wet and humid week it was! Students and staff came back from the long weekend refreshed and ready to learn. A huge “thank you” goes out to Ms. L, helping staff and the Book Fair committee for the organization and facilitation of a very successful fair! We had a fabulous turn out at our Wednesday evening book shopping event. Many students went home with some fabulous new reading material.

Students in grades 5 and 6 met with me on Tuesday regarding beginning a SES student council. They received applications and information about the important role of student leaders within a school. If they choose to apply, they will also have an interview. By the end of the month, we will have a newly formed student leadership team. I look forward to development of this important committee.

As a staff, we have decided on a really fun and exciting event that will take place on Friday October 31st. We will have our first school-wide Vocabulary Costume Day! Students will be working with their teachers to find a really robust and vivid vocabulary word. They will then plan a costume that embodies that word. They will be invited to wear their costume after recess on the 31st, and will have their vocabulary word visible on their costumes. At our assembly we will take pictures and talk about making our words “come to life”. We will also create a school wide picture/word dictionary that classrooms can use. Please see the attached letter for more specifics about this new and fun event.

Looking ahead, students do not have school this Friday, September 24th, as teachers from across the union will be working together in professional development.

Have a great weekend filled with reading all those great new books from the fair!

Sincerely,

Jackie Mendonsa, Principal

Superintendent Search Survey

The search for the new Superintendent is beginning. As a first step, the search committee will need input from the school community regarding the qualities and skills of our next school leader. A survey has been created to gather that information. Please go to:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QSF762S to view the survey which will take approximately five minutes to conclude. The deadline for the survey is October 25, 2014.

Thank you in advance of your efforts to assist in this process.

*Flu Clinic:

The annual Flu Clinic will be held by the Shutesbury Board of Health on Saturday October 18, 2014, from 10AM to 1PM. We have 120 doses available, mostly in injectable form, on a first-come, first-served basis. We have only a few doses of the nasal spray. Please bring your insurance card; it is not necessary in order to receive the vaccine, but insurance reimbursement greatly helps the town recoup some of the costs of running the clinic.
