Principal’s Message:

November 7, 2014

Dear SES Community,

We’ve had another busy and exciting week at SES! Students were treated to a fun presentation on Venice Italy by Gian DiDonna and his students from Frontier High School.  The presentation featured great photographs, puppetry and theater!  We also had lots of families in our school for conferences with SES teachers.  It was great to see so many families in the halls and classrooms.

On Wednesday Chief Harding, Chief Tibbets, Trooper Carmichael, Superintendent Mahler and I met to discuss the safety of students at transition times, lunch and recess. We did not practice an official lockdown, but rather taught the students where to go and what to do if there was an emergency when they were not in their grade-level specific classroom. We are continually looking to ensure the safety of our students, in a safe and anxiety-free way. We will continue to work to make sure that all students feel safe and comfortable in school.

We are working to post some pictures on our website of our Vocabulary Costume Day!

Please check the website for some truly fabulous vocabulary words and costumes!

Next week, there is no school on Tuesday, November 11th as it is Veteran’s Day.

There is also a half-day on Thursday, November 13th, due to conferences.

Dismissal will be at 1:00pm on the 13th.

I have included a picture of Jessica, Dennise and I in our team costume for

Vocabulary Costume Day.  Jessica was ketchup, Dennise was mustard and I was

relish!  Our team word was “condiment”.  Chef Gail helped round out our team

costume as a hamburger!

Enjoy the weekend,

Jackie Mendonsa, Principal

***SCHOOL NEWS***

4th Grade 100 Mile Club Report!
Dennise, the school nurse, has spear-headed a 100 mile club at SES.  She is starting with the 4th grade this year and hopes to expand to the whole school next year.  Matt Foster measured and staked out the upper field for this program.  Children are able to walk or run during recess in the attempt to accumulate 100 miles during the school year!  During the first 2 months approximately 10 of our 4th grade students have walked or run more than 20 miles!!  The other students and staff are not far behind.  The incentive program (T-shirts, wrist bands, etc…) was generously donated by the Shutesbury Athletic Club and will be presented to children at the next assembly on Friday, November 14 at 2:30pm.   Look for our tally poster in the front hall of SES!

FREE 4-foot fluorescent light bulbs!
Our school received a wonderful MassSave grant to purchase lower wattage light bulbs this fall.  Matt Foster, head custodian, has been working diligently to replace all of our older light bulbs.  We now have about 650 fluorescent bulbs, 4-foot length, that are in working order that we will no longer use.  If anyone could use them, please call Jessica (ext. 0) in the main office.
