February 6, 2015

Dear SES Moose,

Mother nature is certainly having fun! We finished out the first week in February with another crazy schedule. It’s hard to believe that we have only one more week before February break. We are all really hoping that next week brings a regular and consistent school schedule and routine!

On Tuesday February 3, 2015 the Union 28 Joint Supervisory Committee met to publicly interview the Superintendent Candidates. The Committee collected feedback from the public after interviews and read aloud the comments written. The Committee also asked for feedback from the search committee. They then discussed their own viewpoints and finally voted (9-4) to offer the Superintendent position to Jennifer Haggerty. Jennifer Haggerty has accepted the position, and will begin her work with Union 28 effective July 1st. Mr. Mahler will spend time with Ms. Haggerty over the summer to help with a smooth transition and support.

The “Line Fairy” has been visiting SES! What is the “Line Fairy” you may ask? As a school, we have been working on school-wide expectations. At our last assembly, we discussed what type of behavior in the hallway helps to create the best learning environment at school. We discussed quiet, thoughtful lines, keeping our hands to ourselves and keeping personal space (bubble space) between people in lines. The “Line Fairy” has been flittering about spotting expert students demonstrating their understanding of hallway behavior. Ask your students about her!

I wanted to remind families in grades 3-6 about the PARCC informational meeting I am holding at school on February 24th at 6:30pm. At this meeting I will discuss some of the changes from MCAS to PARCC and what PARCC will look like at SES. We will also take a look at some sample PARCC tests. Though this meeting is recommended to parents and guardians of 3rd-6th graders, any other parents and guardians of our younger students are invited if they have questions around PARCC as well.

I wish you all a fantastic weekend. There are some reports (wince) of snow for early next week. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and doing a “no snow dance” so that perhaps the forecast may change!

***PTO NEWS***

Hello SES community! On February 10th (date change due to impending snow storm), at 6pm the PTO is having an auction postcard stamping party! We will meet in the conference room at school, put stamps on the postcards being sent to businesses in Pioneer Valley and beyond, thanking them for previous donations and reminding them to donate an item or service to our Spring 2015 Auction. Many of you signed up with our new Sign-up Genius program to help with this event. Thanks so much! For those of you who have not yet signed up, but want to attend, come on over that evening! We will have pizza, drinks and music to keep us going! There will be many hands and this will make our work much lighter.

Thank you all so much!

Shutesbury PTO

BOXTOPS! BOXTOPS! BOXTOPS!

It's time to send in our boxtops for the spring submission. Remember every ten boxtops earns us a dollar for the school.  It really does add up. You can find boxtops on brands like Cheerios, Ziploc, Cascadian Farms, Food Should Taste Good, Betty Crocker and many other items. Look for the boxtop logo and cut it out (the official boxtop will have an expiration date).  Send them in to the school with your child or drop them off in the office. Bring them in by next Thursday, February 12 for the upcoming submission. Thanks for your participation!  -Amber O;Brien and Tyler Schenck ( your SES boxtops coordinators ).
