NO SCHOOL.  SPRING RECESS

April 6, 2018

Dear Moose Community,

Thankfully we've had an uninterrupted week of school! Grade 6 worked hard and completed the ELA MCAS. Grades 3 and 4 attended the Pioneer Valley Symphony in Greenfield on Thursday with Mr. Peelle. Some students are beginning planning for our springtime drama club, and others are enjoying the fresh air outside at recess building forts and playing imagination games.

Next week is our last week before April Vacation. On April 10th and 12th the 3rd and 5th graders will take and complete the ELA MCAS on the computer. Grade 4 completes the ELA test on April 24th and 26th.

Looking ahead, keep May 11th free on your calendars as it is the FAMOUS 34th Annual Spaghetti Dinner put on by the grade 6 students and families. Our gym gets transformed into a beautiful Italian Bistro! Keep your eyes out for tickets and details coming soon! You don't want to miss this delicious tradition.

This is a reminder that the last day of school for students is Monday June 25th.

Best,

Jackie

Cardio Kickboxing is a fusion of boxing, martial arts and aerobics usually done rhythmically to music. Offering an intense cross-training and total-body workout it utilizes the training routines used by combat athletes in martial arts, boxing and kickboxing.  The most important part of Cardio Kickboxing is breathing! We will focus on breath and how to breathe through the combinations and moves including exhaling hard and fast to release energy.  The goal is to sweat! ***COMMUNITY INTERVIEW OF THE MONTH***

SUSIE MOSHER, TOWN CLERK

INTERVIEWED BY 6TH GRADER, JORDAN GOODHIND

JS1     JS2

JG:  What does the Town Clerk do?

SM:  It’s an old job, since the beginning of New England.  I’m the keeper of town records.  Now we use computers and copiers.  In the old days they had to write everything so they had to be educated.  In this book (see photos) we have old marriage licenses, death certificates.  This looks like the person sat down and caught up this goes from ’41-’38.  That’s why town clerks were invented - to keep a record of everything – births, deaths, marriages, dog licenses.  Meeting minutes are public records.  Another thing I do is find information for people.  We let people know what rules and laws apply to what they want to do.  There’s some concern now about how honest elections are in the US and I can tell you, Town Clerks keep it honest.  Town and state elections are managed by Town Clerks.

JG:  What are the qualifications of being a Town Clerk?
SM:  In Shutesbury the Town Clerk is elected so it could be a popularity contest (but it’s not!).  You have to be a careful listener and dependable – show up and do your work.  You have to be organized.  You have to learn new systems – tech makes changes, laws make changes.  And you have to have good problem solving skills.

JG:  And be flexible?
SM:  Yes, flexible and able to use basic math skills of learning how to take apart something and figure out a pattern.

JG:  What other jobs/work have you done?
SM:  I have been a bookkeeper and a teacher.  I mostly taught 4th grade in Orange, but I did teach here in Shutesbury - 1st grade for 1.5 years.

JG:  Have you ever been to the 6th Grade Spaghetti Dinner and will you be coming this year (May 11)?
SM:  I always buy a ticket.

JG:  What do you like about working/living in Shutesbury?
SM:  The natural beauty of this town.  I go for a lot of peaceful walks and I kayak on Lake Wyola.  That’s a very special feature that we have.  You can borrow the library kayaks.  Another thing I like it’s small enough for any person young or old to work with town government.  In Shutesbury a person can make changes in the lives of everybody, like with the Community Clean Up.  We’re thinking of combining the Clean Up with Bulky Waste day so it would be the first Saturday in June.

JG:  What school did you go to when you were younger?
SM:  I grew up in Amherst so I went to Amherst schools from grade 1 through high school.

JG:  Do you remember your 6th grade teacher and do you have any funny stories from 6th grade?
SM:  If you ask Ms. Merritt, my 6th grade teacher, she would rightly say that I was a very mean girl.  I am sorry to say I tried to be popular by being mean to others.  That’s why I try to be inclusive now and start projects that involve lots of people because I was terrible in 6th grade.  As for funny stories, when I was in elementary school we did not have a cafeteria to buy lunch.  Everyone had to bring her or his lunch from home.  I distinctly remember our 6th grade trip to visit the Amherst Junior High for a day.  I was excited, worried about the right clothes to wear, who was going to be my buddy.  I was paired up with a 7th grader to shadow all day.  The high point of the day for me was lunch!  The cafeteria served tuna boats – a hot dog bun filled with tuna salad and a triangle shaped piece of cheese for the ‘sail.’  I was really impressed and that’s the only thing I remember from that day.
