Hello Moose!

What gorgeous weather we've had this week!  The children have been able to be outside and enjoy the sunshine, but with this warmer weather comes some summer time hazards.  Please make sure your child brings a water bottle to school and if they need it, please apply sunscreen and bug spray before school.  Tick checks are also important at this time of year.  We love the outdoors but we also want everyone to stay healthy!

This afternoon and tonight, Brian Bender's bands will perform.  These students (in 4th-6th grades) have worked very hard learning how to play their instruments, how to play particular songs and how to play within a band!  We are looking forward to hearing the old favorites and the new songs that the bands have learned this year.  Performances will be at 2:20pm and 6:00pm.

Next week we will be presented with the String Instrument Concert on Wednesday, May 30.  The string instrument students (from 2nd-6th grades) will perform at 10:30am and 6:30pm on that date.  We look forward to seeing a different group of musicians showing us what they have learned this year.

We also have the 2nd grade poetry walk, the Staff Appreciation Luncheon and an assembly next week!  Busy, busy Moose!!  Thanks to the SES community for all of their support during this busy time - between field trips, special performances, and the day to day learning there are a lot of events to keep track of.  Please check the school calendar on the website or the Dates to Remember in the Roadtown if you have any questions.

Have a wonderful long weekend!

Jackie

***MOOSE INTERVIEW OF THE WEEK***

Sam from Preschool!

SA

JCB:  What is your favorite thing to do at school?
SA:  Play with Javian.  We go on the swings.  I play outside with him.  Even I play with Otto.

JCB:  What is your favorite food?
SA:  Grapes, even broccoli, even rice with lots of butter.

JCB:  What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?
SA:  I play outside with my dog, Buck.  Sometimes when I throw his toy, and you chase him, and he runs super fast, I can’t even catch him.  He’s a little dog.  It’s black.

JCB:  If you could be any animal what animal would you be and why?
SA:  Meow.  A cat.  Because I make cat sounds and I can make dog sounds.  Woof woof!

JCB:  What are you looking forward to doing this summer?
SA:  Going to the beach and playing with Javian and having a picnic and having ice cream and going at a park and having a picnic and having ice cream too.

JCB:  What are you looking forward to next year in kindergarten?
SA:  Going outside.  The same stuff [as this year].

***COMMUNITY MOOSE INTERVIEW OF THE MONTH***

Michael DeChiara, Outgoing Selectboard Member, interviewed by 6th Grader, Forrest Carvalho

MDFC

FC:  What qualifies you to be on the Selectboard?
MD:  Part of being on the Selectboard that’s helpful is knowing the town of Shutesbury.  The example would be if a kindergartener and preschooler came in to the school, they wouldn’t really know about the school, but a 6th grader would know all about the school.  If you know the town it’s easier to help people.  Knowing the town and knowing how things work is helpful.

FC:  And what does the Selectboard do?
MD:  We make sure that the town works smoothly, and that things that people need to live in town happen.  There’s a police chief and a fire chief, and they know what they’re doing.  But we help to make sure that they’re talking to each other.  For example there is a school committee and they do their job, but sometimes when they need money, we help them get it.

FC:  How is this different from being a School Committee Member?
MD:  I was on the school committee for 9 years, and the difference is that the School Committee thinks about the school but the Selectboard thinks about the whole town.  The School Committee makes sure SES is a great place for kids.  It’s the same as the Selectboard making sure the whole town is great for everybody.  The School Committee makes sure the school is working well and the Selectboard makes sure the town is working well.

FC:  What do you like the best about living in Shutesbury?
MD:  I think there are two things.  It’s pretty, I like living in the woods.  I like that it’s small and people know each other.  Even though I haven’t been in the school for years I still know people:  I’ve known Jessica for 20 years and I saw Ms. Lee and I know you [Forrest] because I know your mom [Martina].

FC:  Do you remember 6th grade and do you have a funny story about that year?
MD:  I grew up in New York City so my 6th grade was really different from your 6th grade.  When I was in 6th grade I was mugged!  That’s when people come up and want your money.  Three older girls in 8th grade came up and took my money!  It doesn’t happen around here.  I also remember playing Keep Away at recess.  That’s where you throw the ball and keep it from the other team.  The playground was asphalt with a big fence around it.  My school was plopped in the middle of an asphalt yard.  No grass, no tress, and we didn’t do forts.  I think I like Shutesbury because I grew up in New York City!

FC:  What was your favorite subject in school?
MD:  That’s easy. Social studies. I still like it.

FC:  Could you think of some ways that kids could be more involved in our town and town government?
MD:  Town Meeting only exists in New England so it’s a place where anyone who lives in town can vote on something important to you.  So this year, Town Meeting voted to give the school money for a new playground.  I would think maybe for 5th and 6th grades, they could figure out what’s an important issue and have a Town Meeting about it.  The whole time you’re here at SES there are ways to represent ideas, ways to listen to each other and figure out how to learn from each other.  You could have a Moose Town Meeting!  The moderator should wear moose antlers!

FC:  Would you be interested in attending the 6th Grade Portfolio Presentations on Thursday and Friday, June 7th and 8th?
MD:  I love portfolios and I think they’re the best.  I would encourage all parents and town officials to attend because the questions are good and there are thoughtful kids who do really cool stuff.  Everyone should attend portfolios!  You know who should come to portfolios the most?!  Kindergarten parents so they can see where their kids are headed.
