Dear Moose Community,

We've had a delightful 3rd week of school! Students have been invested in their learning communities. Tunes from Annie the musical have been coming from the music room as Miss Samm has been doing some theatrical work with the students! Mr. Carra and the Moose Lodge students are having fun playing games and learning the rules and expectations of after school time. Our Moose on the Move Club has picked up on Wednesday mornings and Thursday afternoons. It's a busy and joyful time at SES.

Next week, SCHOOL PICTURES will happen on Friday the 20th. This is an earlier date than in years past. Students will bring an order form home. Pictures can be ordered by the paper form or online with the code located on the form. We have appreciated Geskus because there are more options for customization for types of packages/pictures.

Also, on Friday the 20th, 4th grade will go on a walking field trip to the MN Spear Memorial Library. They will look quite fancy in their picture day outfits, strolling into town!

The 5th and 6th grade team has decided to begin a new team building and special activity at SES. On Friday, September 27th, students will return to school at 6:00 pm for the first annual SES CAMPOUT! The 5th and 6th graders will be camping out in the SES gym. The night will include a nature hike with flashlights, a campfire with stories, pizza and s'mores, team building games, stargazing with telescopes, crafts and a movie with popcorn. Students will have a pancake and cereal breakfast in the morning. This special activity is just for 5th and 6th graders! I can't wait to experience this with the students.

Please remember that Open House will be on September 25th from 6:00-7:00pm (students can attend!). Also, Celebrate Shutesbury will be happening on September 21st on the town common! Lots of fun activities, music, treats, and books will be there!

If you have not received a letter notifying you of free/reduced lunch approval, and you feel your child would benefit from this assistance, please fill out the lunch form that was sent in first day packets and send it back. If you have questions or need a new form, please contact Jessica.

Enjoy the full Harvest Moon this weekend and Happy Friday the 13th!

Jackie

***SCHOOL NEWS***

  • If your child is a pick up, please make sure to sign out with Ms. Darby in the library.
  • If your child takes the bus, please make sure to be at your bus stop 5 minutes before the scheduled pick up time (https://www.travelkuz.com/union-28#dm)
  • If there is any change in plans for your child for the end of the day, please be sure to send in a yellow note.  We expect children are riding the bus – pick ups, Moose Lodge Club and Moose on the Move Club need yellow notes.  Thanks!

We are happy to let you know that the school is piloting a brief weekly all-school mindfulness* practice.  We believe this will support our efforts to help children feel calmer, more engaged, and part of a community of learners.  We feel that the simple practice of dropping everything and paying attention to the feelings, sounds and sights around us contributes to one's ability to participate more fully in the school day.  This will be led by Andrea Darby** using the intercom and supported by classroom teachers.  All the students will have been introduced to the practice before we begin.  We are excited to try this and hope that you are able to support our effort by asking your children about their experience.  Please feel free to contact your classroom teacher with questions or concerns.

*Mindfulness: Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment with openness and curiosity.   Or, more simply put: The practice of paying attention to what is happening in the present moment, without judgement.

** Andrea is a long time mindfulness practitioner and teacher who has trained with Mindful Schoolshttps://www.mindfulschools.org/

JCB:  What do you like best about school so far?
HS:  Making new friends!

JCB:  What is your favorite food to eat?
HS:  Broccoli.

JCB:  What do you like to do when you’re at home?
HS:  Watch TV.  Watch the Stinky and Dirty Show.  It’s about a garbage truck and a dozer and they’re good friends together.

JCB:  What do you like to do on the playground?
HS:  Swing on the swings.  And I do that every day….well, almost every day.

JCB:  What is your favorite book?
HS:  I got a brand-new book of doing ballet!

JCB:  Do you take ballet class?
HS:  Well, at least now I do!  I was not expecting there to be a brand-new friend in my class.

JCB:  What have you done to make your brand-new friend comfortable?
HS:  I greeted them into our school.

***MOOSE LODGE CLUB (AFTERSCHOOL) NEWS***

Moose Lodge Club Update: Hello Shutesbury Moose Community. The protocol for having students stay with our club after school is different than in the past. If you wish to enroll your child, or to be approved for a drop in slot, please only connect with Mr. Steven Carra directly via email. With approval, and a club contract students can then, bring a yellow note to school.  Payments must be made at latest, the morning of attendance, via check, or online.

Thank you for reading and understanding the new adjustments. This will help me to spend more time creating and planning each amazing session with for our Moose Lodgers.

Sincerely, Mr. Carra ([email protected])

We have had an amazing start to the Moose Lodge Club. Just in our first official week we have had our students run and walk a total of over ten miles. Also, we have specialized in fort building. Our Moose Lodgers used all of the foldable mats in the gymnasium to create some amazing structures that any architect would be proud of. This week's science videos were from one of my all-time favorite humans. Mark Rober is a NASA engineer who has helped to create the space rover that is on Mars. However, he is also an amazing Youtuber who shares science experiments such as how to create liquid sand or the physics behind carnival scams! Hope to see you at the Lodge, and have a wonderful and active week!

Sincerely,

Mr. Steven A. Carra

Our kids have been part of Wolftree programs for over four years and throughout this time, I have watched them develop a strong connection to nature.  In a world inundated by technology and demanding schedules, Wolftree has given our kids the time and space to learn from nature outside the classroom.   This is such a unique program because it not only allows your kids to learn through play in the woods, it builds their respect for the environment.”  ~ SES Parent of Wolftree Participants
