Dear Moose Community,

It is incredible to think we have 2 days of school next week and then we have 3 days of Thanksgiving break! When we come back to school it will be DECEMBER 2nd! 2020 will be 29 days away!

We are SUPER excited about our Annie production on December 6th! Miss Samm has sent home an informational sheet regarding expectations for the performance. We have attached it to the RTN for your convenience. Remember there are 2 shows that you may attend. The dress rehearsal on December 6th at 2:15pm and the evening performance at 6:30pm! The show is only 30 minutes long! We are thrilled at the enthusiasm and participation of ALL of our students. It will truly be a JOY filled event! All students are a vital part of the show, so we are expecting all students to be able to join us on Friday December 6th at 6:15 pm. Please let Miss Samm know if your child will not be able to attend the performance ([email protected]).

Today grades 4-6 were able to travel to Ja'Duke to watch their performance of Annie. It was great that they were familiar with the story and the songs! The show was fabulous and it has made the students even more excited for our school Annie review! Thanks to Miss Samm for making this happen!

Next week, the 6th grade and some Moose on the Move members will participate in Monte's March for Hunger. We have a change jar in the front hallway and are collecting spare change to donate to the cause. Please consider donating your spare change for an awesome cause!  You could also donate online at https://www.pledgereg.com/3278/shutesburymooseshutesburyelementaryschool.

This past summer, the Massachusetts Department of Education made the decision that "Blizzard Bags" will not continue to count for a day of school in Massachusetts Public Schools. Thus, SES will not continue the use of Blizzard Bags.

Remember, next week students only have school on Monday & Tuesday. Thanksgiving break begins on Wednesday, November 27th.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I continue to be so very thankful to spend my days with the students, staff and families at SES. I am grateful for the incredible teachers that work so hard every day for the children of Shutesbury.  I appreciate the constant support shown to the school from the families and the town. I am grateful for the shared community belief of the importance of a robust, well-rounded and full educational experience for children.

I will see you all in December!

Jackie

***MOOSE INTERVIEW OF THE WEEK***

Zoey from 3rd Grade

ZOS

JCB:  What do you like best about school?
ZOS:  Kind of, like, science and stuff like that.

JCB:  What do you like to do when you’re at home?
ZOS:  I like to play video games.  I like Red Ball 4, Minecraft, Crossy Road.  Today is the day it was made.

JCB:  What’s your favorite book?
ZOS:  I like Diary of an 8 Bit Warrior.  It’s a Minecraft book.

JCB:  What do you want to be when you grow up?
ZOS:  I don’t know yet.  I might want to be maybe a stop motion animator or maybe an author.

JCB:  Does Ms. Lee know you are interested in stop motion animation?
ZOS:  I shared one at assembly.  It was the crocodile one.  It was the first one I had drawn.  My dad helped me with it.  I might share another one.

JCB:  What is your favorite food?
ZOS:  I have three favorite foods:  I like chicken tenders, the Asian noodle bowls that my mom makes, and cheese pizza.

JCB:  What do you like to do on the playground?
ZOS:  I like to go on the swings sometimes.  And there’s something I like to do on the blacktop.  It’s a game that me and Jackson and Tansy made up.  It’s called Line Tag.  You have to go on the lines of the blacktop and you have to try to not get tagged and you can’t go past the basketball hoops.

JCB:  Is there anything else you’d like the Shutesbury community to know about you?
ZOS:  I really, really, really , really, really, really, really like Minecraft.  [After reading  this  Zoey commented that I could have just written one really with an underline.]

Nature Outdoors: Exploration and Engineering Grant at SES!  Thanks to 5th grade teacher, Laura Ginsberg-Peltz, for submitting the grant proposal to make this happen!

This grant is awarded from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, as part of their STARS (Students and Teachers working with Artists, Scientists, and Scholars) grants program.  The school applied to work with Ted Watt, educator with the Hitchcock Center.  Every school in the state is eligible for this grant every year.  Grants are awarded in the order in which they are received online beginning at a specific submittal date and time.

Ted is designing field trips and activities to coordinate with classroom curriculum in all classrooms.  Here are some of the topics we will be exploring:

4 - Erosion and Animal Adaptations; how can we prevent soil erosion?  What animals are active in the snow around our school?

On Tuesday, November 26 the SES 6th graders and the students from the Moose on the Move Club will have the option of joining Monte Belmonte from 93.9 The River (WRSI) on Monte’s March for Hunger.  Monte walks from Springfield to Greenfield over two days to bring attention to the problem of hunger in the Pioneer Valley and to raise money for the Food Bank of Western MA.  Shutesbury’s 6th grade and Moose on the Move participants will be joining him from Amherst Center and walking about 3.5 miles to Cowls Lumber.
