Dear Shutesbury Moose,

I am so very excited to taste my first delicious Spaghetti Dinner meal tonight! The SES 6th graders and their parents and teachers have been working very hard to prepare for the annual Spaghetti Dinner tonight, May 8th! The gym has been transformed into a 5 star restaurant. There are 6:00pm and 7:30pm seatings for this event. The 6:00 seating has nearly sold out, but there is still some room at 7:30pm. Before, after or during the dinner people can visit the PTO sponsored Silent Auction. This event has TONS of really amazing prizes. Paddle boards, gift baskets, jewelry, a picnic table, concert tickets and many other amazing prizes will be available to bid on. It is truly astounding to see our entire community coming together to make these special traditions happen. HUGE thanks to all who have helped in this planning!

Last Friday, the SES Student Council with the organization of Susie Mosher and Sally Fairfield, remained after school to participate in a school-grounds clean up! The students raked, swept, picked up trash, trimmed branches, collected sticks and planted flowers. The school grounds looked beautiful, and right in time for Town Meeting. Many thanks to Susie, Sally and Steve Sullivan who organized and facilitated this great community event. Here’s a few pictures of the students in action!

This week students enjoyed the beautiful sunshine and weather. The second graders invited families in to share their “Countries of Origin” projects!  Students rehearsed for their band, string/orchestra or general music concerts that are coming up.  The preschool held their traditional and wonderful May Day celebration outside. Please see some photos of the Preschool celebration below!

The week ahead includes 5th grade Science and Technology MCAS testing on Monday May 11th, and Tuesday May 12th.  Mr. Bender’s band concert will also take place on Wednesday, May 13th. There will be two band performances, one at 10:30am and 6:30pm on the SES stage.  The All Kids Got Talent Show will be held on Friday, May 15th at 6:30pm.

I hope to see many of you tonight at the SES “Ristorante”!

LK: Outside, I really like soccer. Inside, I really like board games and drawing.

JM: What do you want to be when you grow up?

LK: I want to be a pro soccer player in Croatia. Like, I want to play for them (Croatia).

JM: What is your favorite subject in school?

LK: I like math. I feel it is my academic strength and it can be fun working on the problems.

Staff Appreciation Lunch:  This year's lunch will be on Thursday, May 28.  It is a great way for parents to thank the teachers and staff of Shutesbury Elementary School for all they do for our children.  The staff always express their great enjoyment and appreciation of this event.

We need volunteers to contribute food and drinks and to set up (9-11:30am) and clean up (1:15-2:45) the lunch.  If you can help in any way, please contact Ann Shea ([email protected]).

Big Hero 6 Night - UMass & Fire Depts. Program
Big Hero 6 Night will include demonstrations of public safety vehicles and equipment.  “Big Hero 6 Night,” a community event with public safety personnel from Amherst, Hadley and UMass Amherst, is being held Friday, May 15 at the Southwest Horseshoe on University Drive.  The Amherst and Hadley police and fire departments, UMass Police Department and the Environmental Health and Safety department are hosting the event, which includes a free barbecue and interactive displays of public safety vehicles, gear and other equipment from 5-7:45 p.m. There will also be a free child passenger safety seat checkpoint, according to UMass Police Lt. Tom O’Donnell.
The activities will be followed by an outdoor screening of the animated feature “Big Hero 6” with free popcorn starting at 7:45. Attendees should bring chairs and blankets to sit on.
“This is a great opportunity for people of all ages to meet those who protect their community,” says O’Donnell, “and get answers to all their questions about police and firefighting work by the people who do it.”
The rain location is Curry Hicks Cage.
