October 22, 2015

Dear Moose,

Students and staff have really enjoyed our fall Book Fair this week, including our special family night event that occurred on Wednesday evening. Many thanks go to Ms. L for orchestrating this fun event. We were able to get engaging books in the hands of our students and earn some money for the purchasing of high-interest books in our library.

Next week our family conferences begin. This means 2 weeks of some schedule changes. On Wednesday October 28th and Thursday October 29th, students will be dismissed at 1:00 for conferences. The following Tuesday, November 3rd and Wednesday, November 4th will also be 1:00 dismissals for conferences. Please remember that if you would like to utilize our After-School Program, that registration documents and pre-payment needs to occur before your student can attend.

This is a reminder that we will hold our 2nd annual Vocabulary Costume Day on October 30th. My letter detailing this event has been included in the last 2 Roadtown issues. Students have been brainstorming words that they could illustrate through costumes. Students will bring costumes to school on the 30th and get into costume after lunch. Like last year, all students need to have a word sign with their costume. Also, no face paint, masks or props are to be brought to school. We are really excited to continue this fun tradition. Please reference my Vocabulary Costume Day letter for more details.

There have been some wonderful donations of pencils, stickers, art supplies, tissues, and cleaning wipes to the school from families. Thank you so very much! These items are always welcomed and very, very appreciated by everyone at the school!

Thanks for reading,

Jackie Mendonsa

HALLOWEEN CANDY DONATIONS NEEDED! Due to the fact that ALL trick-or-treating in Shutesbury happens along Leverett Road on Halloween night, these families get inundated with trick-or-treaters.  We have decided to donate back to these homes so that there is no financial burden on the families that make Halloween so special for all of our children.  Bags of sealed candy will be collected in the Main Office at Shutesbury Elementary School and at the MN Spear Library from now until Oct. 30.  Please consider donating!

In 'Chasing Ice,' we follow James Balog across the Arctic as he deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras designed for one purpose: to capture a multi-year record of the world's changing glaciers.  Balog's hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate.

Local geologist, Al Werner, will answer questions about the film and climate change after the screening.
