September 11, 2015

Dear SES Community,

We have completed a wonderful second week of school! The weather was a bit…warm, but spirits were high. This week, students worked on classroom and school safety routines. Chief Tibbets came on Thursday and we had a successful fire drill.  The Chief even told us that we set a school record with how fast everyone was accounted for outside (2 minutes and 32 seconds)!

We hope everyone received our follow- up email last week that announced the re-scheduling of Open House.  The SES Open House will take place on Wednesday, September 30th! Pre-K families will meet at 6:00 pm.  Grades K-3 will meet from 6:30-7:15 pm in classrooms. From 7:15-7:45 pm an all school community meeting will occur in the gym. Finally grades 4-6 will meet in classrooms from 7:45-8:30 pm. We hope that this schedule allows for families to attend several classroom meetings if they have students of varying grade levels.

The After School Program is up and running! If your student will be attending After School, please be sure to fill out an enrollment sheet, and turn in your signed form around the policies and protocols of the program. I want to remind families that the After School Program is only available to families that pre-pay for the service. We are not able to make exceptions to this policy at this point.

We will embark on our first full week of school next week! Student Council applications will be given out to fifth and sixth graders who are interested in student leadership.  We will continue finalizing classroom routines and procedures and continue to have great learning experiences together.

I did not want to close this letter without acknowledging that it is September 11th.  I want to leave you with a quote that has resonated with me from the one and only, Mr. Rogers.  He wrote, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping. To this day, especially in times of 'disaster,' I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers -- so many caring people in this world."

In Peace,

Jackie Mendonsa
